Mario B. Damiani, J.D.

As an individual who has lived with Becker Muscular Dystrophy and related disabilities for over 45 years, Mario is intimately familiar with the stigma, barriers, and challenges patients face in obtaining health care that not only addresses their ailments but also accords them due respect and agency in their health care decisions. As a former subject in a clinical trial, Mario also understands the additional burdens that research participation poses on patients, their families, and their caregivers.

His goal in forming Mario Damiani Consulting L.L.C. was to leverage his legal and advocacy background with his life experience and unique perspectives to effectively promote, represent, and protect the health, safety, and welfare of patients – particularly those in vulnerable populations – who selflessly choose to participate in clinical trials.

Since 2016, Mario has served as a Community Member on two Institutional Review Boards at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and on External Data Monitoring Committees for two pharmaceutical companies conducting clinical research aimed at the development of treatments and therapies for Duchenne and Becker Muscular Dystrophies.

He also has two decades of experience as an attorney and government official dedicated to protecting the rights and well-being of others, especially individuals with disabilities.  His work has included: enforcing Federal accessibility and disability rights laws at the U.S. Access Board; setting national policies aimed at the recruitment, hiring, retention, and advancement of employees with disabilities at the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP); and, at the District of Columbia Department of Health, investigating medical and allied health practitioners accused of misconduct, often at the expense of their patients.

Mario holds a J.D. and B.A. (Summa Cum Laude, Politics) from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he completed a six-year B.A./J.D. joint degree program at the age of 23.

Mario was a founding member and the first chairperson of the Adult Advisory Committee of Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), and previously served on MDA's National Community Advisory Committee.

He lives in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., with his wife and three young daughters.  Click here to read more about Mario's personal and family life.
